Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Details

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Updates and maintains various GIS layers and databases, including the City's street, parcel, centerline, subdivision and utility data, using ESRI-ArcMap software by interpreting information from new subdivision plats, tax rolls, and as-built civil engineering plans. 
  • Creates and maintains documentation for GIS layers applications and procedures. 
  • Performs quality control review for assigned GIS data layers. 
  • Prepares maps/data required from various GIS layers as directed. 
  • Links GIS features to Laserfiche images using the City’s current Imaging Retrieval System for “as-built” drawings. 
  • May troubleshoot and assist with maintaining various printers and plotters as directed. 
  • Assists customers in the mapping area as directed. 
  • The incumbent interprets engineering construction plans and various digital data for ESRI-ArcMap use, and develops and maintains documentation for the adding, converting and maintenance of GIS data. 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Requires working knowledge of ESRI-ArcMap software; ability to read and understand civil engineering plans, site plans and plats; working knowledge of computers and peripheral equipment. 
  • Position requires effective verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Proficiency with ESRI-ArcMap software, proficient using the COGO tools in ESRI-ArcMap software required. 
  • Requires basic ESRI-ArcMap analysis and map creation. 
  • Must be skilled in the use of computer and peripheral equipment and have the ability to accurately document technical information. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associates Degree in Computer Science, GIS, or related field.
One year of experience in ESRI-ArcMap software; one year in civil engineering.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Texas Class C driver's license.
