Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Intern - Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center, Sustainability Office, City of Denton

SALARY: $10.00 - $15.00 Hourly

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for assisting the Sustainability in all day-to-day operations
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist Sustainability in operation of Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center
    • Open Building and oversee site during Denton ISD field trips
    • Evaluate and communicate trail conditions for field trips and for maintenance report
    • Monitor supplies, water (drinking and rainwater), provide list of supplies to supervisor in timely manner
    • Assist with volunteer scheduling at nature center and volunteer projects
  • Assist with Sustainable Schools
  • Assists special research studies, which includes compiling data, analyzing results, preparing reports or illustrative materials, and recommending proposed actions
  • Under direct supervision, may assist with routine operations of the department
  • Assists with computer operations, which includes data entry and retrieval
  • Assists with customer inquiries and complaints
  • Prepares memoranda, letters, and similar administrative responses upon request
  • Answers telephone, refers and direct calls, answers routine inquiries, runs errands, and performs other department support functions upon request
  • Professional appearance required
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of one (1) year of college coursework
Core Competencies:                                          
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance
 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law)

Intern II - KDB Tree Rebate Program, City of Denton

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for providing direct support to Keep Denton Beautiful for the Tree Rebate Program and other tree programs under the Denton Tree Initiative.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•Assists with planning and implementation of the Tree Rebate Program and other programs falling under the Denton Tree Initiative, a campaign to plant 12,000 new trees in Denton by 2019
•Receives, processes, and monitors applications for the Tree Rebate Program, and works collaboratively with City Customer Service, Public Communications, and other staff to ensure that work is completed efficiently and correctly
•Communicates with applicants for the Tree Rebate Program to answer questions, provide assistance, and relay program requirements
•Researches, organizes, and analyzes program data for compilation into various reports
•Collects, records, analyzes, and tracks tree survival rates and other measures of program success
•Assists KDB staff on special projects, preparation of materials, analysis of findings, and presentation of findings to staff and other community stakeholders
•Works to foster relationships with area nurseries, landscapers, and tree-related businesses to facilitate promotion of, and participation in, the Tree Rebate Program
•Communicates regularly with area tree vendors to ensure availability and pricing of qualifying trees through the Tree Rebate Program
KDB Team Responsibilities •Participates as a part of the Keep Denton Beautiful Staff Team
•Attends weekly staff meetings and
•Participates actively in KDB programs and events, and serves as a source of support for fellow staff team members
•Ensures that all events, programs and communications are within the scope of the organizational mission and vision
•Answers and returns phone calls, greets visitors to the KDB office, and works with the KDB staff team to ensure general upkeep of the KDB office environment
•Maintains a professional image and appearance, as indicated by various situations and events requiring interaction with the public and with City departments
•Works to cultivate positive, collaborative community relationships to further the work of KDB

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

•Current enrollment in a college or university level program requiring an internship

•Ability to interact with customers professionally and provide good customer service
•Ability to maintain a high level of attention to detail in a fast-paced environment

•Ability to work outside in temperature extremes, and assist with all aspects of tree planting projects
•Ability to lead groups of volunteers to complete a project
•Ability to work with, or easily learn, relational database systems such as Microsoft Access
•Skilled in the operation of a personal computer and software, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

•Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law)

•Must be able to work Monday through Friday, with regular weekend and evening events (20 hours per week)

Position Description:
GIS Assistant, Part-Time
Intalytics is seeking assistance in conducting geo-fencing activities for our retail and restaurant clients. The job will involve utilizing Google Earth to geographically define polygons around specific locations. Candidates should be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week, with actual hours fluctuating up or down based on demand (up to 25 hours per week).
