Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

North Texas in DC Internship Program

The North Texas in DC Internship Program (NTDC) is an exciting opportunity for students to intern in Washington, D.C while earning UNT course credit. NTDC students intern for a wide range of institutes, from Capitol Hill to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History to a variety of non-profits and think tanks. Students that are accepted into the program take between 3 and 6 class credit hours and receive free housing and a stipend for their time in Washington.

The program is seeking intelligent, motivated, and articulate students who want to expand their collegiate experience beyond Denton. Information workshops will be on the following days.

Description:The TRA Planning and Environmental Services department is looking for a highly-qualified and driven engineer to work on wastewater collection system, in-plant, and water distribution hydraulic modeling. This individual will work closely with wastewater and water supply engineers and operations staff to provide model results to support ongoing projects and future planning efforts. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience in wastewater collection, in-plant, and water supply distribution hydraulic modeling. Responsibilities: 1. Performs modeling tasks as needed for InfoWorks CS, InfoWorks ICM, and H2OMAP Water models. 2. Provides engineering support for: A. Wastewater collection and water distribution systems; B. Model evaluations; C. Field investigations; and D. Planning and design projects. 3. Provides timely completion and submission of project deliverables. 4. Works closely with the GIS department on data management and data QA duties. 5. Works on multiple, unique assignments simultaneously with strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills. 6. Strong reporting skills, both written and verbal. 7. Requirements:Education and Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering. Minimum of 5 years of related experience. Proficiency with InfoWorks, H2OMA Water, ESRI Arc GIS, and MS Office. Knowledge of HEC-RAS and Replica strongly preferred. Valid Texas Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one. Preferred Qualifications: Licensure as a professional engineer. Collection system modeling, planning, and design experience with large and operationally-complex systems.

This position performs planning work for the Transit Department. In addition to the specifics of transit planning, work is performed in other disciplines, such as transportation, land use, zoning, community development, emergency management and geospatial sciences as it relates to the transit system. Incumbent establishes methodology and utilizes existing procedures for compilation of transit related data to be utilized in reporting for internal county use and external private and public entities. Coordinates transit services responsibilities and applications with other county departments, municipalities, and private or public sector entities. Responsibilities may include making of presentations to staff, elected officials, various committees, and/or the general public.

Examples Of Essential Duties:

  • Compiles, analyzes and maintains transit system performance measure statistics; such as, route hours and miles, ridership, etc. 
  • Provides monthly and annual transit performance measure reports to various internal and external entities. Maintains inventory of passenger amenities. 
  • Works with other units within the department on adding new route configurations, adjustments to bus route timing, and reviewing of transit service requests or trans propensity that might require new or adjusted service. 
  • Assists in the determination of travel accessibility based on location analysis of fixed route assets. 
  • Updates and maintains database used by third party vendors in providing services to LeeTran. 
  • Maintains professional communications with various County departments, other government agencies and private entities; provides information, answers questions and promotes transit service in Lee County. 
  • Reviews transit goals and objectives for any updates of the Lee Country Comprehensive Plan. 
  • Assists with and/or conducts public presentations. 
  • Prepares maps, graphics and charts.

 Typical Qualifications:
  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Planning, Geography or related field that is applicable to Transit Planning. 
  • One year of experience in a government agency or private firm doing work in city, county, regional or state planning is required. 
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required. 
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Teach assigned courses in accordance with the course syllabus and college policy.

Continue to update and revise course content and teaching methodology in order to maintain currency and relevance.

Maintain familiarity with current texts, materials, teaching aids and techniques relative to courses within the discipline and recommend their adoption when appropriate.

Actively seek ways to improve instruction.

Provide advice and/or assistance to associate faculty in regard to course content and instructional materials.

Post and observe a minimum of six office hours per week for purposes of academic advising and student consultation.Hold office hours at times which will be most convenient for students.Meet with students as needed by appointment.
