This position is located at Zion National Park.
This is a TERM position. Initial appointment is 13 months with possible extensions up to 4 years. Extensions are based on workload and funding.
This position is also career-seasonal (i.e., subject-to-furlough) in nature and does not provide employment on a year-round basis. You may work a minimum of 26 weeks but generally not more than 50 weeks a year. Actual work schedule and period of furlough is contingent upon funding and operational needs.
DUTIES:The incumbent is a Geographic Information System (GIS) technician for Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument and Pipe Spring National Monument. Works in the Division of Resource Management and Research at Zion National Park and is supervised by the park GIS Program Manager. As a whole the GIS program supports park management and other divisions (maintenance, interpretation, visitor services and protection).
Implements a variety of natural resource, cultural resource and fire management GIS and GPS projects within the three park area. Duties include fieldwork to collect resource information and in the office to synthesize and manage natural and cultural resource data; provides technical support of the GIS and GPS equipment; provides sample collection and maintenance of the park's air quality station. Also is the park's GPS coordinator.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires long periods of sitting in front of computer terminals. Some prolonged bending, crouching, lifting (up to 50 pounds), climbing and reaching are required to perform routine hardware maintenance and move equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is usually performed in an office setting. Outdoor field work in varied climatic and terrain conditions is required.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally HOT with daytime temperatures averaging 100 plus degrees Farhenheit in the summer and 55 degrees F in the winter. Night time lows range from 85 degrees F in the summer to 30 degrees F in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah located two miles from park headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane, Utah (25 miles from the park), St. George, Utah (45 miles) and in Cedar City, Utah (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-6) is available in Springdale with bus service provided. Dixie College is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City.
Park housing is not available.
