Course credit for internships

Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Summer Internship - Real Time Farms

Real Time Farms, an online crowd-sourced food guide, is currently hiring interns for the Summer 2012 Food Warrior internship program, which will run from May 21st through August 20th. We are hiring Food Warriors in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Providence and Washington DC. Highly qualified applicants in other cities may be considered, as well.

The goal of Real Time Farms is to collectively document the entire food system, so whether eating in, or dining out, you can trace your food back to the farm it came from and feel good about the food you eat. Our Food Warrior Program is integral to this social mission.

Description
Food Warriors work to bring the stories of their local food producers and artisans to life, through photos, video, stories, and growing practices. In so doing, you will be connecting everyday consumers to the information they need to make informed decisions about what they eat. You will learn about food photography, food blogging, and documentary film, and have a chance to apply your new skills while directly interacting with local producers: taking photos, recording and editing video, collecting information on growing practices and personal stories, and contributing to the Real Time Farms blog. Exemplary work may be considered for inclusion in Slow Food USA’s blog.

Food Warriors will work approximately 15-20 hours each week and will be responsible for uploading all the information, photos, and video compiled to the Real Time Farms website. The internship is unpaid, but students may earn academic credit for completing the internship. I am willing to work with individuals to adjust program expectations to better meet academic requirements.

Interns are able to adjust the internship around their own schedules, but should be available for one 1-hour virtual group meeting each Monday. Internet access and a camera are essential.

Enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and passion for food transparency are a must. Writing, videography, and photography experience are a plus.

How to Apply
Email me at lindsayp@realtimefarms.com with "Food Warrior Application" and your city in the subject line.

Please attach a copy of your resume and answers to the following questions:
1) Why do you care about food transparency?
2) What else will you be doing with your time this summer and how will you fit the internship in to your schedule?
3) Sample blog post on a related topic (be creative!) with sample photos (taken by you) OR sample short video (filmed/edited by you)

Please inform me of any previous experience with interviewing, blogging, journalism, photography, videography, or work within the food system. Also, please let me know if you have access to a car (Not necessarily required, but we need to make sure at least one intern in each area has a car to travel to farms.)

Applications are due April 2nd and will be considered on a rolling basis, so the sooner you apply, the greater your chances of acceptance to the program.

Americorps

In case you aren’t familiar with it, AmeriCorps NCCC is the National Civilian Community Corps and is a full-time national service program.  It is a 10 month, team-based, residential program that provides opportunities for young adults to perform service that addresses the critical needs in urban and rural communities.  NCCC members work in teams of 10-12 to complete projects in the areas of the environment, energy conservation, infrastructure improvement, disaster relief, and urban and rural development.  NCCC is also starting a partnership with FEMA which will increase members’ opportunities for working in disaster relief areas.

NCCC is only for individuals ages 18-24 at the time their service commitment begins.  So it is perfect for students who have just graduated from college and still aren’t quite sure what they want to do, are having trouble finding a job, or who want to take a break between undergraduate and graduate school.  NCCC is a great opportunity for our students, especially in this job market, and it allows them to gain valuable, hands-on job experience.

Some of the main benefits to the students include:
-Education award of around $5,500 (to be used towards future education expenses or to pay back student loans)
-Room and board
-Living allowance of $4,000
-Limited health and child care benefits
-Student loan forbearance

Applications for fall placement are due by March 31stStudents apply online at http://my.americorps.gov.

If you have any questions about the program, you can find more information at www.americorps.gov/nccc or you can contact our region’s Community Relations Specialist, Heather Dirck at hdirck@cns.gov or 303-844-7420.  I have also attached scans of the recruitment and application fliers I have in my office.
