Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Internships

NEON 2016 Internship Opportunities.

Terrestrial Microbial Ecology Internship: internship will include compilation and analysis of microbial metagenomic data from soils, and some work assisting with field site characterization efforts.
Terrestrial Ecology/Instrumentation Internship: internship will include site characterization field work and computer work analyzing the influence of instrument set-up and tower infrastructure on the quality and accuracy of meteorological measurements.
Engineering/Calibration Internship: internship will include optimization and evaluation of gas system calibration.
Airborne Observation Platform Internship: internship will involve developing software tools for open access of AOP data products, including performing preliminary analyses using the tool.
GIS Internship: internship will involve assisting with all aspects of GIS support work (e.g., integrating internal and external spatial datasets, preparing and publishing maps, updating metadata) and preparing maps to support field logistics.
EcoInformatics Internship: internship will involve assisting with building ontologies describing NEON data, writing an external API to NEON data, or writing code to generate dynamic data visualizations of NEON data.

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Current undergraduate with a least one semester of undergraduate studies remaining
  • US Citizen or permanent-resident status

Job Description:
Dewberry is seeking a GIS professional for FEMA Flood Study and water resource related projects. Typical projects involve assisting federal, state and local clients in completing flood study related projects. Technical responsibilities include:

  • Assisting engineers in hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, modeling, and floodplain mapping;
  • Production of Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and updating related geospatial databases;
  • Developing flood risk products and performing flood risk assessments;
  • Perform analysis on GIS datasets for flood hazard  mapping and risk projects;
  • Checking for graphical and technical accuracy of FIRM deliverables and associated reports;
  • Coordinating with the project team, project managers, clients, local communities, and other contractors to compile all data necessary to produce the most up-to-date product.
  • Apply GIS in other water resource related projects to help identify and solve client challenges.
Required Skills & Required Experience:
  • Bachelor degree required (Master degree a plus), geography or GIS degrees preferred
  • 0-5 years of professional work experience in geography (preferably in FIRM production and National Flood Insurance Program knowledge)
  • Knowledge, interest, and project experience in GIS  (ArcGIS 10 or higher) applications
  • Strong oral, people, and written communication skills 
Desired Skills:
  • Strong ArcGIS, MS Excel and MS Access skills to leverage various data sources for use in GIS projects
  • Background in water resources consulting that include hydrology and hydraulic work.
  • CFM (Certified Floodplain Manager) is a strong plus
  • Knowledge of FEMA's MIP tracking and reporting system a plus
  • Any experience in Program implementation that included reading and implementing specifications for clients.

The purpose of this position is to assist professional staff with special projects and provide administrative support to the daily operations of an assigned service area. This is accomplished by assisting in monitoring, reporting, researching, and evaluating projects and programs; assisting in the update and maintenance of program information files; performing unique responsibilities; and providing highly responsible technical administrative support to an assigned department. Other responsibilities include providing accurate information to other city departments and the general public.
 Essential Functions:
  • Assist professional staff with special projects and administrative duties by completing a variety of functions related to an assigned area of responsibility; monitoring, reporting, researching, and evaluating projects and programs; and assisting in the update maintenance of programs as assigned.
  • Collect, compile, analyze and research information from various sources on a variety of topics related to assigned programs; prepare reports which present and interpret data and identify alternatives; provide support as needed for completion of special projects in support of assigned department.

 Minimum Qualifications:
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. College, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training up to and including a two year associate’s degree. No experience required. Must be enrolled in bachelors or masters degree program or recently received a degree.
