Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

George Melendez Wright Young Leaders in Climate Change (YLCC) Internships

 
The George Melendez Wright Initiative for Young Leaders in Climate Change (YLCC) builds a pathway for exemplary students in higher education to apply cutting-edge climate change knowledge to park management. Through a summer-long internship, undergraduate and graduate students will gain valuable work experience, explore career options, and develop leadership skills under the mentorship and guidance of the National Park Service (NPS). Parks and programs will increase their capacity to understand and respond to climate change and its impacts.

National parks and NPS programs develop and oversee structured projects in one or more of the following interdisciplinary areas: climate change science and monitoring; resource conservation and adaptation; policy development; sustainable park operations; facilities adaptation; and communication/interpretation/education. During the internship, students apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to climate change challenges and communicate with diverse stakeholders. Interns who successfully complete the YLCC, an approved Direct Hire Authority Internship program, will be eligible to be hired non-competitively into subsequent federal jobs once they complete their degree program. These jobs would be in the Department of Interior (DOI), NPS, or one of the other bureaus within the DOI. An intern must qualify for the job in order to be hired non-competitively.

Position Summary

The GIS Technician - Intern is an entry level position responsible for updating the land base and utility facilities in the GIS database.  The GIS Technician will input data, as well as integrating outside data into the existing GIS database, so that it is organized in a manner that can be used throughout the company.  The GIS Technician – Intern will also produce hard copy maps, diagrams, and reports for crews and offices.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines.  Responsible for reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
·         Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines.  Responsible for reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
  • Data Development – create and/or update existing information within the GIS system using the proper coordinate system and units that will correspond to the CoServ mapping system while creating and maintaining corresponding metadata.
  • Produce quality cartographic maps for crew, departments, and office personnel.
  • Files, updates, and maintains subdivision plat data.
  • Uses GPS equipment in the field to collect utility facility and other map information.
  • Integrate outside data with GIS database.
  • Assists during company outages.

Secondary Position Responsibilities

  • Attends training on GIS, CAD, GPS and other systems.
  • Maintain plotter and keep in working order; replace pens or ink cartridges and paper in plotter.
  • Follows internal company procedures for forwarding records, documents and information to other departments and personnel.
  • Field checks problems.
  • Understands and follows various software and machine manuals such as GIS, CAD, and GPS manuals.

Position Summary:

BASIC FUNCTION:

Purpose
To develop, maintain, and update various coverage’s and database layers of the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) as directed by the Public Works Director.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Maintain the City’s GIS data using ESRI suite of software.
2. Create and document GIS procedures as directed by the Public Works Director.
3. Modify existing databases.
4. Responsible for creating, developingt and maintenance of GIS databases performing data creation, and some cartography.
5. Using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, collect, transfer, input and plot grid coordinates, and other data from surveyor’s data, field notes and engineering plans.
6. Use GPS units to collect point data for various City utilities and public infrastructure inclduding fire hydrants and water valves.
7. Maintain and update City GIS maps including planimetric and topographic maps for water, sanitary sewer, storm water sewer, streets,alleys, subdivisions, Right-of-Way, easements and floodplain.
8. Collect and enter raw data into the GIS computer system for City infrastructure using City’s available software.
9. Use AutoCAD to view engineering drawings to get detailed information to use for GIS data entry.
10. Maintain computer database records for data files and Geographic Information System layer information.

Since 1991, North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Regional 9-1-1 Program has served as the planning and implementation organization for 9-1-1 services on behalf of their local governments. Required Experience
  • Work requires knowledge in a general professional or technical field that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.  Must be attending an accredited college or university during employment.  Pursuit of a degree in advertising, public relations, marketing, political science or planning is preferred, but not required. 
  • No work experience required


Salary
Minimum of $11.86 per hour
