Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

GIS Analyst Intern, City of Grapevine

Under the supervision of the GIS Manager, the GIS Analyst Intern will assist in the collection and updating of the City’s GIS Data.  Will assist in the development of useful Web maps and applications to assist employees, citizens and visitors in using our GIS information for their daily job duties, or to gain useful information about our City and its activities.

 Nature & Scope:
1.        Collect needed field data, and/or update existing GIS data using ArcGIS software and GPS devices.
 
2.        Assist in the development and deployment of Web maps and applications using templates provided by Esri.
 
3.        Print needed maps requested by other departments throughout the City and citizens.
 
4.        Assist with public communication of GIS information, including social media and print.
 
5.        Assist in support functions as needed.

 Required Skills:
Currently pursuing a degree in GIS, Geography or a related field, or pursuing GIS Certification in the UNT, UTD, TCC or Brookhaven GIS program.

Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office software.  Should be self-motivated and able to stay on task with a minimal amount of direction.

Position requires applicant to pass a criminal and credit background investigation and must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy

GIS Technician, Avizion Technologies Group

Job Description

Duties:

Engineering Asset data maintenance and editing within a variety of systems focusing on, but not limited to GIS. Evaluate existing asset data for accuracy against multiple sources, including: aerial imagery, field collected data, engineering design plans, and more. Assist team members with internal requests for GIS data, mapping, and analysis. Assist in the evolution of a maturing GIS data model. Support field data collection activities from the office to maximize work efforts. Qualifications:

College degree with an emphasis in GIS (willing to accept relevant experience or two years relevant coursework toward a degree in lieu of a full degree). Candidates should be highly proficient with the use of ArcMap desktop software and have the ability to use the editing, validation, and analysis tools. Ability to use SQL within GIS for data query purposes is a plus. Knowledge and experience using linear referencing is a plus. Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.) is a plus. Qualified applicants must demonstrate above average organizational skills, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a desire to drive for results. **Position Summary:** 
The Environmental Technician is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of landfill gas extraction systems, leachate collections systems and other related systems at Republic Services landfills. The position is accountable for the ongoing monitoring of such systems, ensuring that all work adheres to safety regulations, as well as federal and state requirements. 
 
**Principal Responsibilities:** 
• Conducts, or assists with, environmental sampling that may include ground water, surface water, air quality and gas migration. 
 
• Measures and records gas levels in landfill well fields and at probes in the landfill boundary to ensure the ongoing compliance with applicable safety regulations, as well as federal and state requirements. 
 
• Troubleshoots and corrects landfill gas extraction systems when necessary; report more complicated issues to management to ensure timely correction. 
 
• Manages and troubleshoots leachate system to ensure it continues to operate in accordance with safety standards, federal and state regulations. 
 
• Performs landfill surveying activities as required.

Responsible for GIS technical support of the Real Estate Division in delivery of the City of Denton’s programs and services.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Meets with staff to define data needs, requirements, and required outputs.
  • Collects, verifies and analyzes real estate and demographic data.
