Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

City of Denton - GIS Intern

SALARY RANGE
$10.00 Hourly

DESCRIPTION:
The Geographical Information System (GIS) Intern is responsible for maintenance and updating current GIS layers, and creation of new layers of the online GIS mapping for the Planning and Development Department in relation, but not limited to, parcels, land use, gas wells, and gas lines located within the City of Denton and the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). The GIS Intern is under the general supervision of the Planning Manager or designee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Maintains online interactive gas well mapping program
  • Creates maps and graphs, using GIS software and related equipment
  • Meets with users to define data needs, requirements, and required outputs
  • Gathers, analyzes, and integrates spatial data from staff and determine how best the information can be displayed using GIS
  • Analyzes geographic relationships among varying types of data
  • Prepares metadata and other documentation
  • Analyzes and maintains Microsoft Excel databases
  • Operates and maintains GIS system hardware, software, plotter, digitizer, color printer, and video camera. Move, copy, delete, and add files, drawings, and maps to output reports in hard copy or electronic transfer
  • Presents information to users and answer questions
  • Retrieves stored maps
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited university program of study in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geography, computer science, or a closely related field is preferred
OR
  • Have completed two years of higher education toward a GIS or related field
OR
  • Obtained GIS certification

  • Knowledge of GIS software and applications
  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve defined practical problems
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection
  • Knowledge of other computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Applications such as Excel Spreadsheet
  • Have excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, and the general public
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed
  • Ability to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind
  • Ability to accept and implement feedback from supervisors, colleagues, customers and others
  • Ability to understand and manage emotions, and accurately assess the emotions of others

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check (for positions requiring driving as an essential function), and criminal history background check
  • Must have a valid Class “C”/ or “Commercial” Driver’s License prior to employment (if the essential functions require driving) OR Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within six months of date of hire
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be able to work an average of 20 hours per week


PREFERENCES:
  • Preference will be given to applicants currently in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) curriculum

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids: The essential functions of this position require the daily use of a computer and all office related machinery, (i.e. calculator, copier, printers, plotters, phones, etc.)

Environmental Factors: The essential functions of this position are performed in an office environment and involve long hours in front of a computer screen.
