Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

KJ Environmental Management - Environmental Intern and Associate Positions

Since 2005, KJ Environmental Management, Inc. has specialized in environmental consulting
services to mining, industrial, oil and gas, real estate, and commercial clients. We work with
companies, investment groups, state and federal government entities, and with commercial
property owners to provide strategic planning, civil engineering, due diligence, problem solving,
environmental compliance, and environmental permitting.

Position Overview:
The Environmental Associate position is a full-time position that offers a positive, self-motivated
person a unique opportunity to be a part of a growing business in a very dynamic, rewarding field.
This position offers a balance of time between in office report writing and field work.
The Environmental Intern position is a part-time position which offers a motivated individual an
opportunity to learn multi-media environmental consulting in a professional atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities: (including, but not limited to):
Phase I ESAs, Phase II ESAs, Remediation, SPCCs, SWP3s, Tier IIs, NORM Surveys, Asbestos
Inspections, and Providing Client Training. This candidate must have a good oral and written
communication skills. Must show proficiency with time management, deadlines, and budgets.
Must have an understanding of manufacturing processes, and be able to perform independent
research and mathematical calculations. These positions will require up to 25% travel.

Requirements:
Environmental Science or similar educational background, Exceptional Oral and Written Skills,
Positive Team Working Attitude. Adobe Acrobat, Excel, Microsoft Word experience required.
HAZWOPER preferred. A bachelor’s degree is required for the Environmental Associate position.
At least two years of environmental or related coursework is required for the Environmental

Intern position.

CoServ - GIS Analyst

Successful members of the IT GIS team excel in two major areas:

A.Hard Skills, referring to abilities required to accomplish the technical aspects of a position, and

B.Soft Skills, referring to the cluster of personal qualities required to accomplish the business goals of a position.

 The GIS Analyst 1 is responsible for data development, data QA/QC, requirements gathering, workflow analysis, application testing, general analysis/map production and training users on GIS software utilizing CoServ’s enterprise GIS applications.  This position is a key player in a departmental team which designs and implements GIS layers and applications to provide CoServ efficient and effective spatial solutions.  The position requires analytical skills to be utilized in a team environment in support of CoServ’s GIS initiative.   In addition, the position will at times require independent work on CoServ’s GIS initiative.

The GIS Analyst 1 will participate in departmental projects by assisting in the development of project plans, documentation, and task execution.  He/She will perform daily system maintenance tasks and participate in on-call duty.  The GIS Analyst 1 will be responsible for researching, recommending, installing, configuring, and maintaining technology in a multi-platform mission critical environment.

Primary Position Responsibilities
Hard Skills:
 •Complies with established CoServ’s safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting unsafe practices to a Manager.
•Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines.  Responsible for reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
 •Evaluate existing data and processes, define and perform QA/QC workflows.  Implement process improvement’s that include both manual and/or automated technologies.
•Troubleshoot errors and test GIS applications.
•Administration, development, and support of CoServ’s Enterprise GIS applications and systems.
•Assist with, test, develop deployment plans, and implementation of Enterprise GIS System software upgrades.
•Train users on the use and adoption of GIS technologies.
•Execute project activities for a variety of data development, data maintenance and migration tasks.
•Create documentation on data quality, applications, and GIS workflows.
•Create standardized mapping, spatial analysis, data analysis, and data reporting for the facilitation of end-user consumption.
•Other duties as required.

Soft Skills:
 •Customer service oriented.  Always incorporates the view of the end user in technical solutions
•Maintains effective working relationships with the other departments and individuals supported.
•Ability to utilize GIS technologies, specifically ESRI and/or GPS.
•Ability to assist with the analysis of business processes and migration of data to GIS.
•Ability to assist with the analysis of workflows for trends to identify problem areas, improve business processes and provide solutions.
•Knowledge of GIS data development, editing and quality control procedures.
•Serve in project team, produces and adheres to quality and thorough project plans.
•Demonstrated ability to work productively with a wide range of people.
 •Ability to assist with presentations for Board, Staff and user conferences as needed.

Education and Certifications Required
•High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
•Verifiable history of progressive GIS experience and responsibility may be substituted for degree.

Education and Certifications Preferred
•BS or BA in Geography or related degree.
       
Experience Required
•3 years of experience with ESRI software.
•Minimum 2 years of GIS technician experience.
•Experience with ARC SDE versioning.
•Ability to demonstrate the concepts of and utilization of ESRI’s ArcSDE and ArcServer applications within and enterprise environment.

Experience Preferred
•3 years of experience with ESRI software.
•2 years of progressive GIS experience.
•1 years of experience with Telvent software within the electric and gas utility industry.
•1 years of experience with Enterprise ArcSDE Geodatabases utilizing Oracle or SQL Server environments.
•Technical writing/user documentation preparation experience.

Skills and Abilities Required
•Self motivated, pro-active, and the ability to multi-task.
•Understanding of basic GIS principles and practices.
•Assist in design, implementation, delivery and improvements for the Enterprise GIS Systems.
•Understanding of application support methodologies and industry best practices.

•Ability to operate office machinery, such as copier, fax machine and personal computer.
