Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description
Since 1991, North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Regional 9-1-1 Program has served as the planning and implementation organization for 9-1-1 services on behalf of their local governments. While the technology has changed rapidly over the years, today the North Central Texas region boasts some of the most advanced technology in the 9-1-1 industry and continues to stay on the cutting edge. An integral part of the region’s advanced technological deployments has included several comprehensive Geographical Information Systems (GIS) solutions. As NCTCOG coordinates 9-1-1 GIS for 13 counties within the region, the team’s charter is to assist these counties and their municipalities in administering and developing valuable 9-1-1 GIS data.

The NCTCOG 9-1-1 Program is seeking a GIS Analyst II to work within a highly innovative GIS team focused on Public Safety. The position will require coalescing of spatial data, maintenance, and detailed QA/QC on the Enterprise level Public Safety GIS dataset. The position will also require a close working relationship with other GIS team members and reporting to the GIS Supervisor. Do you have strong technical and GIS skills? Job Description
The Research and Information Services Department of the North Central Council of Governments seeks a GIS intern to assist in the development and quality control of various GIS layers. Duties include data collection, formatting, and entry; maintenance and editing of databases and GIS files; assistance with various technical and administrative assignments; and basic research assistance.  GIS experience and familiarity with ArcGIS is required.  The ability to follow instructions precisely, communicate clearly, and work independently is also required. A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and SQL is preferred. This position requires the individual be engaged in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited college or university with an emphasis in Urban Planning, Geography or GIS.  This position will work a flexible work schedule of up to 30 hours per week.  Pay range for this part-time position will be $11.86-$13.50 per hour, DOQ.

Responsible for the coordination of software and application support in Streets, Wastewater and Traffic Divisions.
 Key Responsibilities:
  • Translates business data into reports within a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Access and SQL Server Reporting Services and Cartegraph Database
  • Integrates data from disparate databases for reporting, inter-departmental communication, and operational improvement purposes
  • Assists users of existing databases with problem resolution, functionality enhancement, and maintenance
  • Provides explanation of application matters to users with little or no technical background
  • Analyzes, designs, tests, implements, and maintains relational databases such as Microsoft Access and SQL Server and the Cartegraph Pavement View, Work Order System, Signal View and Markings View.
  • Understands the concept of workflow processes and will work with department heads to continually improve and optimize the City’s system
  • Provides analysis of data entry audits to ensure data integrity and to assure processes and procedures are met. Works with incomplete, irregular, or otherwise imperfect data to produce usable, normalized data.
  • Gathers and inputs data to calculate the cost of each repair including material, labor and equipment
  • Assists department director, assistant directors, and managers with administrative assignments such as preparing and coordinating various operating reports, and project creation
  • Makes recommendations concerning departmental data policy and software needs
  • Assists with special projects and troubleshooting issues
  • Works with Technology Services department to maintain hosted databases
 Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field with analytical emphasis and four years of experience.

  • Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field with analytical emphasis and a minimum of six years of experience.

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) Scholarship

The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) is excited to announce the opening of our 2014 Scholarship Program. USGIF is dedicated to assisting promising students interested in geospatial sciences with scholarship awards to further the advancement of the geospatial intelligence tradecraft.

• Students studying geospatial intelligence or any related field are encouraged to submit their applications by the April 25, 2014 deadline.

• Scholarship recipients are chosen based on their academic and professional excellence in a field related to the geospatial intelligence tradecraft.

Last year the Foundation awarded $107,000 to 25 recipients and plans to award at least $100,000 for the 2014 program. Since 2004, USGIF has awarded $584,000 in scholarship funding to promising students in the geospatial intelligence field.
