Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

GIS Technician Intern - Coserv

Job Title:  GIS Technician - Intern
Department: Gas Engineering     
Reports to: Engineering Supervisor
 


Position Summary

The GIS Technician - Intern is an entry level position responsible for updating the land base and utility facilities in the GIS database.  The GIS Technician will input data, as well as integrating outside data into the existing GIS database, so that it is organized in a manner that can be used throughout the company.  The GIS Technician – Intern will also produce hard copy maps, diagrams, and reports for crews and offices.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines.  Responsible for reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
·         Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines.  Responsible for reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
  • Data Development – create and/or update existing information within the GIS system using the proper coordinate system and units that will correspond to the CoServ mapping system while creating and maintaining corresponding metadata.
  • Produce quality cartographic maps for crew, departments, and office personnel.
  • Files, updates, and maintains subdivision plat data.
  • Uses GPS equipment in the field to collect utility facility and other map information.
  • Integrate outside data with GIS database.
  • Assists during company outages.

Secondary Position Responsibilities

  • Attends training on GIS, CAD, GPS and other systems.
  • Maintain plotter and keep in working order; replace pens or ink cartridges and paper in plotter.
  • Follows internal company procedures for forwarding records, documents and information to other departments and personnel.
  • Field checks problems.
  • Understands and follows various software and machine manuals such as GIS, CAD, and GPS manuals.

Position Requirements

Education and Certifications Required


  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • BA or BS degree in geographical information systems, geography, mapping, information systems, engineering, or related field or relevant experience in GIS and/or mapping.

Education and Certifications Preferred

·         None.

Experience Required


·         0-1 years of verifiable GIS Technician experience.
·         0-1 year of experience with ESRI Software

Experience Preferred

·         1 year of experience with Miner & Miner software.
·         Knowledge of electrical utility systems.

Skills and Abilities Required

·         Understanding of basic GIS principles and practices.
·         Ability to operate office machinery, such as copier, fax machine and personal computer.
·         Proficiency using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access).
·         Excellent grammar and composition skills.
·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
·         Excellent organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

·         Works in an office setting.
·         Works outdoors – performs field checks, facility inventories, assists Engineering Techs when required, uses computer and GPS equipment in field.
·         Uses computer for extensive periods of time.
·         Ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.
·         Works extended hours as needed or directed.
