Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description
Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area.  The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.

The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking Interns to provide assistance with bicycle and pedestrian planning and land use analysis.  Applicants wishing to be considered for this position should apply online.  To be considered for any other NCTCOG position that may currently be open, applicants need to apply online separately for those postings.  All submittals should include a cover letter summarizing work experience, as well as a current resume.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Collecting and analyzing land-use, transportation, and demographic data
  • Compiling and summarizing studies and written reports
  • Creating maps using Geographic Information System (GIS)
  • Preparing public outreach and education materials
  • Preparing presentations
Required Skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Microsoft programs
  • Experience with graphic design software such as Photoshop, sketch up, 3-d studio Max, and other graphic design software desired
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment
Required Experience
  • Work requires knowledge in a general professional or technical field that may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.  Must be attending an accredited college or university during employment.  Pursuit of a degree in a related field desired.
  • No work experience required; at least one year of school-related experience preferred

Salary
Minimum of $11.86 per hour

LOCATION/ADDITIONAL INFO: IT SOLUTIONS - APPLICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
Coursework from an accredited college or university with major focus in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field (e.g. Geographic Information Systems or GIS, Geography, Environmental).

Candidates will have at least 1 year of experience with GIS principles and practices in a college setting.  Experience with the ESRI suite of software products 10.x is preferred, specifically experience with land and municipal data.  Programming with Modelbuilder and knowledge of Python scripting is preferred but not required.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The IT Solutions Department is seeking a qualified internship candidate for the GIS Section.  The term of the internship will be for one year, with work hours ranging from 10 to 40 hours a week, depending on school year or summer schedule.  Candidate will be allowed flexible scheduling.  This position will provide exposure to a wide variety of GIS tasks, offering hands on work experience with seasoned GIS professionals.

A quality candidate should be self-motivated and able to multi-task between projects and achieve project deadlines. Applicants should have proficiency with basic GIS concepts for data review, editing and analysis.  The capacity to learn new processes is critical as well as, having good verbal and written communication skills, and being able to work well in a team environment.

GIS Production Intern - Buxton



Description:
We are looking to hire a part-time intern within our GIS department.  The individual is typically enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Geography, Geographic Information Systems, or Environmental Sciences program.  The applicant must be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as with a project team to complete tasks. The prime candidate is at least one academic semester from graduation. This position will perform assignments under the direct supervision of a GIS professional or project manager to complete deliverables. Duties will include: geocoding, producing maps, creating reports and presentations, digitizing and any other departmental needs. The position will pay hourly and average 20 to 30 hours per week.

Requirements:
  • Enrolled in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Natural Sciences, Planning or related program. Minimum 3.00 Cumulative GPA preferred.
  • Knowledge of MapInfo software or ESRI Arc GIS Software, GIS analysis, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office suite.
  • Committed to client service, attention to detail, team-oriented. Must possess strong problem solving and communication skills.
