Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Position Summary

The Engineering GIS Intern is responsible for helping the Engineering GIS group with updating the land base and utility facilities in the GIS database. The Engineering GIS Intern will input data, as well as integrating outside data into the existing GIS database, so that it is organized in a manner that can be used throughout the company.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
  • Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
  • Prepare CAD detail plan and profiles for construction projects.
  • Data Development – create and/or update existing information within the GIS system using the proper coordinate system and units that will correspond to the CoServ mapping system while creating and maintaining corresponding metadata.
  • Produce quality cartographic maps for crew, departments, and office personnel.
  • Files, updates, and maintains subdivision plat data.
  • Uses GPS equipment in the field to collect utility facility and other map information.
  • Integrate outside data with GIS database.

Secondary Position Responsibilities

  • In-house training on GIS, CAD, and GPS as deemed necessary.
  • Follows internal company procedures for forwarding records, documents and information to other departments and personnel.
  • Field inspections as needed.
  • Understands and follows various software and machine manuals such as GIS, CAD, and GPS manuals.
  • Notifies Supervisor of issues with GIS/Designer.

Position Requirements

Education and Certifications Required

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
  • 1 year of course work in GIS

Education and Certifications Preferred

  • BS degree in geographical information systems, geography, mapping, information systems, engineering, or related field.


Experience Required


  • None

Experience Preferred

  • 1 year of experience with ArcFM software.
  • 1 year of verifiable GIS experience.
  • 1 year of experience with ESRI Software
  • Knowledge of electrical utility systems.

Skills and Abilities Required

  • Understanding of basic GIS principles and practices.
  • Ability to operate office machinery, such as copier, fax machine and personal computer.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Excellent grammar and composition skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Operates office equipment such as a computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, etc.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds
  • Ability to drive occasionally
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Works mainly in office with occasional field work.
  • Works in areas with possible exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, and insect stings

  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver's license
