Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description :
Summary: Under general supervision of the Senior Planner, assists staff members and customers with applications for planning and zoning review and permits, performs administrative and procedural duties related to the Development Services Department.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Performs a variety of customer services including answering and directing telephone calls to appropriate staff members, answering routine questions.
  • Assists customers in person, via telephone and email regarding zoning and development questions and status of applications.
  • Utilizes a variety of computer programs and databases to create PowerPoint presentations, locator maps for applications, maintain project databases and to prepare reports and informational packets.
  • Maintains archiving of Department files.
  • Prepares public hearing notices for publication in the newspapers and to send to property owners.
  • Assist Planners in the review of residential plats and substantially conforming site plans.
  • Assists real estate companies, builders, contractors and developers in applying for permits and reviewing plats.
  • Assembles packets for  the Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment and City Council meetings.
  • Delivers meeting packets to the homes of Planning & Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment members.
  • Coordinates the filing of plats at Collin and Denton Counties.
Other Important Duties:
  • Researches existing codes and ordinances for elected and appointed officials, Development Services Department staff, other City departments and customers.
  • Travels to conduct scheduled and non-scheduled inspections, attend meetings, conferences and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
Job Requirements :
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of public administration and urban planning practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service and public relations practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures and development codes.
  • Proficiency required in Microsoft programs and mapping programs such as PowerPoint and ArcMap.Skill in working in a team-oriented environment.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Skill in reading, interpreting and analyzing maps, exhibits, legal descriptions, plats, site plans and elevation drawings.
  • Skill in following and implementing departmental procedures and objectives.
  • Skill in effectively reviewing and processing  residential plats and substantially conforming site plans.
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration or related field, or High School Diploma with 30 semester hours of college-level courses in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies or related field and one (1) year experience in Urban Planning or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check and MVR check.
  • Must possess State of Texas Drivers License.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  • The majority of work is performed in an office environment, but may be subject to extreme weather conditions when delivering packets or filing plats with the County.
  • May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry and vision to monitor.
  • May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting when assisting customers, reviewing specific use permits or zoning plans, retrieving files, records, and plans for staff and customers.
  • May be exposed to hostile or angry customers.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
Equipment and Tools Utilized:
  • Equipment utilized includes personal computer, copier, fax machine, engineering and architect scales, and department vehicle and other standard office equipment.
