Course credit for internships

Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

GIS Intern/Technician - BIS Consultants

GIS Technician I – Internship Position
Farmers Branch, TX
BIS is a private company specializing in contracted IT & GIS services and is located in Farmers Branch, Texas.  We are a premier provider of enterprise-level tech services to county/central appraisal districts and various types of government entities throughout the State of Texas.  Our GIS department is in need of an additional team member in order to keep up with production demands. This is a d20 roll; your primary responsibilities would be: the creation and maintenance of spatial data (mainly surface property parcels), map production and design, printing, and light analysis.  You would function on a team, much like the Power Rangers, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
In order to be successful, the new GIS Technician should have a moderate amount of education and critical reading skills, including an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Geography or GIS; or a non-related degree with a GIS certification. The GIS Technician must have firm knowledge of ESRI’s ArcMap software: data creation, spatial and attribute editing, cartography, etc.  This position is real-deal heavy in reading and interpreting legal documents, deeds, plats, surveyor notes, metes and bounds descriptions, and requires an incredible attention to detail.  Any previous experience with the Texas land survey system and SDE geodatabases is a plus.

This is an internship position; candidates may ignore the italicized portion since they are assumed to currently be in school. We have elected to include the majority of the actual job posting to familiarize applicants with the work level that will be expected from them. This is open to all students of the department.
