Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description:

The Facilities Department is seeking to hire a GIS Field Assistant to join the Geographic Information System (GIS) team. This position reports to the Facilities GIS Manager. For additional information on the GIS team you may visit our website at http://facilities.unt.edu/depts/gis

The purpose of this position is to support the department’s mapping functions. This position will be responsible for using high-accuracy mapping and surveying equipment to measure, collect and record data about the location and condition of university infrastructure and assets. This position will spend the majority of their time outdoors. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Safely and properly operating GPS equipment to record the location of features and correctly document attributes following established procedures.
• Assist in the setup and utilization of survey equipment to map and record data.
• Conduct inspections of field conditions or university assets to either gather new data or verify existing information.
• Communicate with various university and non-university personnel to obtain information via site visits, meetings, phone calls and e-mail.
• Follow established data management procedures, both in the field and in the office.
• The ability to perform work that involves standing, walking, and the ability to safely lift, carry and haul over 25 lbs. of equipment for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions in a variety of outdoor environments.

Job Requirements:
Must have a valid driver license.

Applicants who have prior experience utilizing GIS software and/or Microsoft Office software packages will be given preference.
