Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

LAND PROFESSIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
 Marathon Land Professional interns are immediately involved in diverse and challenging projects by working side by side with others in multi-discipline teams. Interns are placed in a Project Team with an experienced Land Professional who will mentor them throughout their intern period.  These teams are responsible for identifying and executing on strategic Exploration and Production initiatives in North America. Challenging positions are available working North American resource plays in Texas, Oklahoma, and North Dakota. 
 RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in all phases of Land work required to drill and complete wells in the assigned Project Area.
  • Review title opinions and perform curative activities;
  • Assist in Surface Use Agreement and Right of Way negotiations;
  • Review Operating Agreements to determine Marathon's rights and obligations regarding rework and drilling proposals;
  • Utilize the Tobin lease data system to research Marathon’s records to determine ownership, create maps showing current ownership, and assist in reconciling lease ownership;
  • Assist in compilation of lists of respondents for State Corporation Commission filings, including contacting owners and searching internet sources for valid addresses.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education Level: Junior and Senior level candidates graduating between December 2017 – December 2018
  • Major: Energy Management/Commerce or Petroleum Land Management students
  • Students must maintain at least a 3.0 overall GPA
  • Have authorization to work for any employer in the U.S. on a full-time, indefinite basis without need for sponsorship now or in the future.


LAND GIS PROFESSIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Interns will work as a part of the Land GIS Team with experienced GIS Professionals who will mentor them throughout their intern period.   The Land GIS team is responsible for supporting the data and cartographic needs of Marathon’s North American resource plays in Texas, Oklahoma, and North Dakota.  Under the close supervision of the MOC GIS Mentor will learn industry terminology, GIS Software Applications, including 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, X-Tools, and Maplex and standard procedures for maintaining Lease and Contract agreement polygons associated with the Land Department while developing the basis for more independent decision making.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create and maintain Land GIS data through interpreting legal descriptions for oil and gas leases and contracts
  • Prepares GIS maps\exhibits utilizing learned cartographic practices and standards
  • Constructs advanced spatial and tabular database queries
  • Provide assistance to Land professionals and GIS analyst in creation of customized analytics
  • Perform maintenance of Land Department ArcGIS projects and web maps

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education Level: Junior and Senior level candidates graduating between December 2017 – December 2018
  • Currently pursuing BS or BA degree in Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Students must maintain at least a 3.0 overall GPA
  • Proficient with ArcGIS 9.x or 10.x, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Knowledge of Coordinate Geometry (COGO), Model builder, and knowledge of Python scripting is preferred but not required.
  • Have authorization to work for any employer in the U.S. on a full-time, indefinite basis without need for sponsorship now or in the future.
