Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Trinity River Authority Environmental Scientist I or Water Quality Technician I/II

The Trinity River Authority is looking to fill an Environmental Scientist I or Water Quality Technician I/II position.
 
Under the supervision of the Planning and Environmental Services Special Studies and Assessments Manager, this position performs a variety of tasks related to field data collection, field gear and sampling equipment preparation/maintenance and data quality assurance/analysis. The successful candidate must be able to work well within an interdisciplinary scientific team and perform professionally in both field and office settings. This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding labor in harsh, outdoor environments and the ability to perform a variety of technical field data collection activities. The successful candidate must understand the importance of mission accomplishment, possess excellent problem solving abilities and be detail oriented.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
 
1. Maintains, prepares and loads field gear for biological, water quality, geomorphological and hydrological field studies.
2. Plans and coordinates field data collection activities with other state and regional agencies.
3. Maintains databases and performs data quality checks.
4. Cleans and organizes field gear after fieldwork.
5. Produce high quality reports using spreadsheets, databases, word processors and other computer applications.
6. Performs other duties as assigned and assists with special projects and studies as needed.
7. Must be decisive and self-motivated and have the ability to work within a team and alone.
 
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain large amounts of experience very quickly.
This position requires approximately 10-15% overnight travel usually weighted towards summer months.
 
Experience or training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), statistical analysis software, water quality monitoring field methods, biological sampling protocols, streamflow measurement, small boat operations and experience towing and backing trailers is a plus.
 
The Environmental Scientist I position requires a valid driver’s license and a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Science, Geography, Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geomorphology, Water Resources or a closely related field.
 
The Water Quality Technician position requires a valid driver’s license and a high school diploma plus two years college credit including technical/scientific courses.
