Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description

The NCTCOG, a regional planning agency serving more than 200 local governments in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, is seeking a Web Developer for the Department of Research and Information Services.  This is an exciting position with the opportunity to bring huge value to the agency and our region.

The purpose of this position is to support and enhance a variety of applications and develop new solutions as needed. The primary development frameworks are ASP.NET (Web Forms and MVC) with C# and Classic ASP with VBScript.  Work will be accomplished by meeting with stakeholders to gather requirements, designing and administering back-end databases in SQL Server, and developing front-end web applications to meet business needs.  Other duties may include system administration, data cleansing and security management. 
 
Required Skills
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent along with at least three years of experience in web and database development. Candidate must be skilled in object-oriented JavaScript/jQuery and ASP.NET (Web Forms and MVC) development using C# in Visual Studio, database development in SQL Server Management Studio, object-relational mapping with Entity Framework or other ORM software, and Classic ASP development using VBScript.  Candidate must have a solid foundation in writing SQL Server views and stored procedures in T-SQL, developing secure sites using authentication/authorization best practices, properly configuring IIS to run a web application, and using CSS to separate presentation from content. Candidate must have excellent critical thinking skills, a positive attitude, and be effective at communication and technical documentation. Candidate must be a fast learner and motivated self-starter who will take the initiative to learn new technologies and best practices that will benefit the development team and NCTCOG. Experience using JQuery, VB.NET, SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Integration Services, and the spatial functionality in SQL Server 2008 is a plus. GIS web development experience using JavaScript APIs for Microsoft Bing Maps, Google Maps, OpenLayers, and/or ESRI ArcGIS is a plus.
