- Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.The North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking an Intern to support the Transportation Department’s community outreach and public involvement program. Typical initiatives include contributing to outreach and communication efforts related to transportation projects and programs. Applicants wishing to be considered for this position should apply online. Qualified candidates must be attending an accredited college or university and able to work at the NCTCOG offices in Arlington, TX. All submittals should include a cover letter summarizing work experience, as well as a current resume. Please note that this is not a summer-only internship position.Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Searching daily for transportation news articles
- Drafting Web site, social media and publication content
- Researching new opportunities and best practices for expanding social media efforts and traditional print and online publications
- Gathering and organizing materials to take to community events
- Assisting in developing and maintaining a database, including entering data, of department photos for use in publications, social media and other materials
- Assiting in the creation of infographics
- Assisting in the development of department videos
- Maintaining reports on the reach and effectiveness of social media
- Attending meetings and community events, some of which may occur during weekday evenings or weekends
- Serving as a representative of NCTCOG’s goals and mission
- Required Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher and Outlook
- General knowledge of social media as a tool to engage the public
- Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Detail oriented, organized, creative, and ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines
- Must be able to work independently and in a team environment
- Required Experience
- Work requires knowledge in a general professional or technical field that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Must be attending an accredited college or university during employment. Pursuit of a degree in advertising, public relations, marketing, political science or planning is preferred, but not required.

Course credit for internships
Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.
You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.Tuesday, April 8, 2014
