Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description

Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area.  The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking Interns to provide assistance associated with long-range transportation, financial, environmental, social, and multimodal corridor studies.  Applicants wishing to be considered for this position should apply online.  To be considered for any other NCTCOG position that may currently be open, applicants need to apply online separately for those postings.  Qualified candidates must be attending an accredited college or university while in the position and able to work at the NCTCOG offices in Arlington, TX.  All submittals should include a cover letter summarizing work experience, as well as a current resume.


Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Collecting and analyzing transportation, financial, environmental, and demographic data
  • Developing performance measures, scenarios, and goals for long-range planning activities
  • Updating social and environmental planning tools
  • Compiling and summarizing studies
  • Writing reports and compiling documents for publishing
  • Creating maps using Geographic Information System (GIS)
  • Preparing public outreach and education materials
  • Preparing presentations
  • Coordinating and attending meetings
Required Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft programs
  • Working knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment
Required Experience

  • Work requires knowledge in a general professional or technical field that may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.  Must be attending an accredited college or university during employment.  Proof of enrollment/degree plan will be required.  Pursuit of a degree in a related field desired.
  • No work experience required; at least one year of school-related experience preferred

Salary
Minimum of $11.86 per hour
