Why Was The Scholarship Created

      The Memorial Scholarship is a mechanism to honor the individuals who have passed and who had passionately displayed a sincere appreciation towards the committed progress of the GIS professional over the years.  The dedicated contributions made through supporting continuing education, volunteering time, and providing mentorships to the geospatial community to ensure the unbiased professional growth will always be remembered. The impact cannot be measured in the tangible but rather the lives they changed forever.

Goals

•encourage the goals of students and professionals who are working toward their undergraduate or graduate degree in a geospatial science.

•promote and support the increase of knowledge and proficiency of geospatial sciences in the south central region.

•recognize and encourage scholastic and professional accomplishments in the geospatial sciences.

Regional Scholarship Benefits

•$1,000 applied directly to their university account to offset educational expenses.

•Complimentary registration to the upcoming Regional SCAUG conference.

How will the recipients be selected?

The scholarship recipients will be selected by the SCAUG officers. Selection will be based on merit and meeting eligibility requirements as outlined in the application. Scholarships will only be awarded if applicants deemed worthy by the SCAUG officers.

Scholarships will be presented to recipients at their respective educational institutions. If possible, a SCAUG representative will present the scholarship. An announcement of the scholarship winners will also be made at the main session of the corresponding conference of their complimentary registration.

   

Eligibility

•Applicant must be a current SCAUG Member for at least 1 year.

•Applicant must be a registered student, in good standing, in a recognized university, community college, or technical institute in the SCAUG region.

•Applicant must be a current professional working 35 - 40 hours a week in the geospatial field in the SCAUG region.

•Applicant must be enrolled in a course of study in the field of geospatial sciences for the current and upcoming semester (not a 2014 spring or summer graduate).

•Applicant may not be a past recipient.

Job Description

The Real Estate GIS Intern is responsible for GIS technical support of the Real Estate Division in delivery of the City of Denton's programs and services.  The GIS Intern is under the general supervision of the Real Estate Manager or designee.

Essential Functions

• Digitizing and verifying legal descriptions and surveys using GIS tools for properties as needed.
• Meets with staff to define data needs, requirements, and required outputs.
• Update, modify, populate, and clean-up of existing databases, as well as creation of new databases based on division needs.
• Enable the Real Estate department to successfully manage land records using GIS.
• Performs mapping, graphs, and analysis using ESRi – ArcMap 10.1 GIS software and related equipment.

South Central Climate Science Center Summer Undergraduate Internship For Underrepresented Minorities

We are pleased to announce that we will be offering a summer undergraduate internship opportunity in 2017 for students of underrepresented minorities interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields (for example, agricultural science, economics, environmental engineering). Interns will be involved in hands-on activities related to climate research that will allow them to see the direct impacts of climate variability and change on the West Texas Southern High Plains, prairie and forest ecosystems and tribal cultures in Oklahoma, and the bayous, delta and coastline of Louisiana. Internship participants will travel across the South Central United States to visit university campuses and field locations, so they must have the physical ability and willingness to travel or work outside as well as endure different living conditions. Internship participants must be comfortable (but do not have to have prior experience) with traveling by boat and kayak (safety equipment will be provided).

The internship will take place from Sunday, July 9, 2017 to Saturday, July 29, 2017. Interns will spend one week with Louisiana State University, one week with the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, and one week with Texas Tech University. All meals, lodging and travel will be provided during the three week period. In addition, interns will receive a $200/week stipend for the duration of the program. The program will not cover local travel between the participant's home to their closest airport, personal equipment (clothing, cameras, etc.), or other personal expenses.

A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and SQL is preferred. This position requires the individual be engaged in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited college or university with an emphasis in Urban Planning, Geography or GIS.  This position will work a flexible work schedule of up to 30 hours per week.  Starting pay for this part-time position is $11.86 per hour.

Intern Job Description – Irrigation Pilot Study

The Sustainability & Environmental Education Division (SEED) is seeking a part-time, paid intern to conduct the analysis phase of an irrigation pilot study that evaluates changes in residential water use.
Are you curious about the connection between technology and conservation? Are you interested in using data analysis and statistics to determine how a “smart” device affects residents’ water use?

Project Overview & Intern Responsibilities:
The goal of the analysis phase is to gauge changes in water use that can be reasonably associated with the installation of a “smart” sprinkler controller. The intern will:
 Have access to a database of multiple daily meter readings for each pilot study participant’s home during the pre-installation time period and the post-installation time period.
 Use SPSS and/or other statistical applications to determine whether or not trends in the dataset suggest that the “smart” sprinkler controller had a significant effect on overall water use.
 Work under the supervision of the Water Education Coordinator and the SEED Supervisor to finalize the analysis using the dataset, survey data, and other information.
 Complete other related tasks as assigned.

Intern Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will:
 Be comfortable working with a large dataset, using SPSS, Microsoft Excel, and/or related applications.
 Have a solid understanding of statistical analyses and how to apply them to real world situations.

Experience with GIS is a bonus. While graduate and undergraduate applicants will be considered, preference will be given to applicants who have completed intermediate or upper-level coursework in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working somewhat independently in an office setting.
