Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description
The North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking an entry- or mid-level Transportation Planner to support the Sustainable Development program, specifically related to Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordination. This position offers an exciting opportunity for candidates to participate in multimodal active transportation planning activities related to bicycle/pedestrian planning and studies, corridor studies, bicycle and pedestrian counts, safety education, complete streets, urban design/landscaping, healthy communities, data collection, demographic analysis, mapping, and grant administration.  This posting is for the entry-level Transportation Planner I position.

The active transportation network in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area consists of more than 7,000 planned miles of regional shared-use paths (Regional Veloweb), supporting community shared-use paths, and the on-street bikeway network in various stages of development.  This network plays a key role in supporting Mobility 2040 and the implementation of the multimodal Complete Streets and transit infrastructure that assist in safely accommodating all travelers throughout the region.  More information about the Active Transportation planning and programs at NCTCOG is available at www.nctcog.org/bikeped.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assisting with the development, coordination, and review of plans and improvement projects, including roadway, intersection, pedestrian/bicycle, and other capital projects
  • Coordinating with agencies, civic associations, and consultants on transportation projects
  • Preparing correspondence, technical reports, and other documents
  • Preparing presentations
  • Assisting with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and other project committee meetings (e.g., identifying speakers, topics and outreach opportunities, and creating announcements)
  • Assisting with the creation and maintenance of databases
  • Conducting research and data collection
  • Planning, organizing, and promoting public education programs and materials related to the safety and accessibility of pedestrian and bicycle facilities
  • Providing assistance in the management of consultant contracts
  • Creating detailed project maps
Required Skills

  • Understanding of and the ability to utilize Census data and American Community Survey (ACS) data for analysis
Required Experience
  • Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in an analytical, quantitative methods field such as urban/transportation planning, landscape architecture, etc.
  • One year of job-related experience or less
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS 10.2)
  • Experience working with the public desired
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite 6 design software (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop) a plus

Salary
Minimum of $36,976.00 annually
