Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

TWU Emergency Management - GIS Intern

Position Description for GIS/Emergency Management Intern

Reports To: Director of Emergency Management
Pay: $10.50/hr
Appointment Period: September 2015-May 2016 (Approximately 38 weeks)
Avg. Hours: 25 hours per week
Qualifications:
·         Experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS to include using:
o   Editing environment
o   Geo-processing and analysis tools
·         Experience with MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
·         Experience with building and managing databases using either MS Access or Oracle
·         Class in Advanced GIS and experience working with CAD files is desired
·         Strong communication and writing skills
·         Ability to transform and present complex data into information
·         Current student pursuing a degree in or a degree with a concentration in GIS
·         Interest, training, or previous experience in emergency management is preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:
·         Collect necessary data from either field sources or existing databases
·         Build databases to utilize for GIS layers
·         Develop spatial tools and models that could be deployed and used to make real-time decisions
·         Analyze data spatially to turn into information to assist emergency planning and decision-making during an emergency
·         Correspond and collaborate with both university departments and local agencies to build relationships and gather necessary information
·         Deliver presentations on progress of GIS projects to university officials

·         Support other planning and response efforts in the Office of Emergency Management
