Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

NCTCOG - Transportation Planner II - Asset Management

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by and for local governments, and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOG's purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and help them recognize regional opportunities, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and make joint decisions. NCTCOG serves a 16 county region of North Central Texas, which is centered around the two urban centers of Dallas and Fort Worth. NCTCOG has over 230 member governments including 16 counties, numerous cities, school districts, and special districts.

Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing and coordinating transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.

The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking an entry- or mid-level Transportation Planner in Congestion Management and Innovative Project Delivery to assist with the development and application of a regional Capital/Operations Asset Management System. Tasks include supporting work in data collection activities, database organization and maintenance efforts, infrastructure condition assessments, risk analysis, and project scoping aimed to strategically address performance results for the preservation, efficient operation, and effective improvement of physical transportation assets with respect to financial and sustainability constraints. This position will also focus on applying innovative business, design/engineering, and implementation practices with the objective of improved decision-making based on quality information, enhanced resilience to changing mobility and environmental conditions, and greater accountability for the multimodal transportation system to meet well-defined level-of-service benchmarks.  This posting is for the mid-level Transportation Planner II position, and applicants wishing to be considered for this position should apply online at https://mycogcareer.silkroad.com/. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Developing, organizing, and maintaining an asset information database with capabilities to indicate specific data at a corridor and/or regional level, and enhanced linkages to/from other planning data resources within the department
Coordinating with other NCTCOG departments/program areas, local governments, and transportation providers to assemble, organize, analyze, and prepare reporting on data regarding asset conditions and performance
Conducting Geographic Information System (GIS) coding of asset attributes within a fixed coordinate system for various interpretation and illustrative purposes
Performing infrastructure risk assessments and identifying potential maintenance, mobility, economic, and social impacts
Researching and evaluating asset performance in relation to climate change/extreme weather vulnerability and resilience
Participating in value engineering, innovative design, and various preservation/enhancement initiatives to improve asset performance and design-life
Conducting project planning, analysis, quantification, and compliance processes
Presenting ideas and results to various audiences
Providing customer service to partners and stakeholders
Monitoring state/federal rulemaking and legislation pertaining to transportation performance measures, asset management plans, environmental documentation, and climate change vulnerability/resilience/mitigation
Assisting with budget development and monitoring
Aiding in identifying and pursuing potential funding sources and grant opportunities
Required Skills:

Strong verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems (ArcMap), shapefile development, and data manipulation
Ability to operate Windows-based computer programs such as Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word
Ability to prepare, maintain, and modify linked databases with large volumes of information from multiple sources
Familiarity with civil engineering principles and schematic development
Familiarity with travel demand modeling (TransCAD) and/or traffic micro-simulation applications
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Detail-oriented, highly organized, and abilities for multi-tasking
Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in an analytical, quantitative methods field related to transportation and/or comprehensive planning, and civil engineering
At least one year of job related experience

Salary

Minimum of $42,244.00 annually
