Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Job Description :
Summary: Under general supervision of the Assistant Director of IT, the GIS Technician maintains a variety of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases, documentation and map layers.  Inputs geographic data from a variety of sources and produces high quality outputs as needed.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Maintains a variety of GIS layers and databases including street, parcel, subdivision, and utility data while adhering to organizational quality standards.
  • Interprets and transfers data from source documents including digital and/or printed plats, record drawings, plans, profiles, and legal descriptions.
  • Locates and compiles data sources.
  • Collects field data using GPS.
  • Performs quality control for database maintenance; researches and corrects data issues.
  • Drafts special project exhibits as needed by various City departments and divisions.
  • Geocodes data files using GIS software.
  • Designs and develops a variety of map layers and databases for City-wide GIS operations.
  • Creates and maintains documentation for GIS feature classes, applications, and procedures
  • Assists in establishing data preparation standards and procedures to ensure data standardization and integrity and to optimize section productivity.
  • Creates and customizes existing program features using python scripting.
  • Recommends changes to GIS layers and software.
  • Operates and maintains data input/output devices.

Other Important Duties:
  • Travels to off-site meetings, conferences and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
Job Requirements :
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of the design, development, and manipulation of a GIS, Local and Wide Area Networks, Global Positioning Systems, databases and general office software.
  • Knowledge of input and drafting of existing field data from surveyors and engineers.
  • Knowledge of research and technical support techniques.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Skills in designing, developing, and maintaining documentation for GIS feature classes, applications, and procedures.
  • Skill in effectively managing multiple projects, assignments and duties.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • Bachelors Degree or Certification in GIS, Geography, Planning or related field; and two (2) years ArcGIS, SQL Server, Microsoft Office Products, Visual Basic and/or Python experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, MVR check and physical agility assessment.
  • Must possess State of Texas Drivers License.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

GIS Analyst, North Texas Tollway Authority

Overview:
The purpose of this position is to provide technical leadership to GIS users, provide project implementation services, provide GIS technical support services, coordinate project work for other departments, and perform troubleshooting on custom application issues.  Proven experience utilizing ArcGIS Desktop, Network Analyst, 3D Analyst, ArcGIS Server, and project management skills are desired.  Experience working with Asset Management System in conjunction with ArcGIS would be helpful. The individual should be self-motivated with a keen attention to detail and possess problem-solving skills.  Other duties include writing/testing scripts, guarantying quality assurance, writing project documentation, testing mobile applications, and developing custom web applications using ArcGIS Server.
Responsibilities:
  • Helps manage ArcSDE for SQL Server.
  • Creates custom web and mobile applications using ArcGIS Server.
  • Utilizes the Network Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions for specific projects.
  • Maintains ArcSDE feature classes and metadata.
  • Generates custom maps and reports in ArcMap.
  • Provides training and support to GIS end users.
  • Evaluates software that could be beneficial to GIS growth and productivity.

GIS Intern, First Choice Emergency Room

Overview:
The GIS Intern’s primary role is to assist in Development’s implementation of the ongoing facility expansion plan as assigned. The incumbent will support the Development research framework including updating market plans, creating hospital coverage maps, and undertaking key drivers analysis.  The Intern will support Development partners (internal and external including brokers and developers) to facilitate the production of required reports, maps, and analysis as needed.  The successful applicant will liaise with the Marketing team and will support with market analysis, planning tools, and competitive research. Buxton - Spatial Analyst

As a member of the Analytics team, the Spatial Analyst is responsible for analysis, data visualization, quality control of statistical models, and standardization of all geo-spatial efforts. The analyst must use creativity, insight and technical expertise to help our customers derive actionable solutions. The analyst will be engaged in providing business analysis, maps, preparing demographic data, customer data and other geospatial enabled data into meaningful information that can provide insight for our users. This position offers a diverse range of responsibilities that affect real world decisions.
