Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

Qualifications:
·         Experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS to include using:

Position Summary

The Gas System Engineering Technician Intern is an entry level position learning to perform, under supervision of Gas System Design Supervisor, gas flow calculations, gas system design, construction plan layout and preparation, cost estimating and field staking/surveying for construction for system projects. These system projects include lateral extensions for Project Engineering projects, system fortifications and relocations. Other duties and functions for this position include meeting and communicating with Project Engineering and federal, state, city officials to coordinate extensions and relocations; requisitioning equipment and materials needed for construction of gas system projects.

Primary Position Responsibilities

• Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
• Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines.  Responsible for reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
• Provides gas piping designs by determining size, type, quantity and physical placement of gas pipes, equipment and devices including mains, regulator stations, metering stations and equipment on all gas systems.
• Provides construction plans by preparing sketches, drawings, and/or electronic drawings and staking sheets and other documentation in sufficient detail to facilitate construction of the project in a timely and efficient manner and according to CoServ Gas design and construction standards and specifications.
• Prepares a list of materials required for the project.
• Provides construction plans by providing information and details for easements, permits, line locates for foreign utilities, contact information for property owners, government officials, foreign utility companies, etc.
• Performs field services, staking and surveying by performing field measurements; placing stakes and other markers to identify the locations of pipes, regulator stations and metering stations; obtaining right of way easements from property owners; obtaining applicable federal, state and local permits.
• Prepares construction cost estimates by calculating labor and material cost estimates for system projects.
• Resolves design and construction issues by meeting with and communicating with federal, state and city officials.
• Communicates with contracted engineering consultants for the design of system projects.

• Utilizes CADD Software to aid in design and construction of system projects.
• Trains to read and comprehend information on civil design plan and profile sheets, such as pavement, sanitary sewer, water line and storm drain, to aid in gas design.
• Trains to produce plan and profile sheets for gas system design using CADD software.
• Trains to utilize company GIS Software to aid in design and construction of system  projects.
• Trains to utilize pipeline locating epuipment to aid in design and construction of system projects.
• Trains to utilize GPS/Survey equipment to aid in design and construction of system  projects.
• Contributes to team effort by participating, communicating, and cooperating with other departments in cross-departmental projects and initiatives; taking on additional duties and tasks on a temporary or permanent bases as needed to support and/or assist other departments and/or to realize organizational efficiencies.
• Follows safe work practices by following the proper use of equipment, vehicles, tools, and job procedures.
• Follows safe work practices by applying CoServ Safety Rules and procedures when working at the following job sites: field, shop, and office.
• Follows safe work practices by documenting and reporting deficiencies with equipment and procedures, and taking correction action to remedy those deficiencies.

City of Denton, Sustainable Denton Intern

Internship Summary

The City of Denton is seeking one intern to assist with data collection and analysis for Denton’s certification through the STAR Community Rating System. 

The STAR Community Rating System is the first national framework to measure sustainability at the city or county scale and provide a tracking system to help local governments measure progress towards achieving community sustainability goals. In the spring of 2016, Denton hopes to achieve its first 3rd party verified STAR Community rating. The rating framework includes 7 goal areas, 44 objective areas, and hundreds of related outcomes and actions. This effort will provide Denton with sustainability metrics and ratings for bench-marked comparison to other communities across the nation. Sustainable Denton will use STAR to showcase gaps and catalyze community action to close them.

Intern Responsibilities
·         Work directly with Sustainable Denton to determine alignment between Denton’s local sustainability initiatives and STAR’s performance metrics
·         Research and collect information on community conditions related to STAR’s 7 goal areas: Built Environment; Climate & Energy; Economy & Jobs; Education, Arts & Community; Equity & Empowerment; Health & Safety; and Natural Systems
·         Identify and collaborate with key resources and partners to support Denton’s STAR application, such as internal departments and outside stakeholders throughout the community
·         Participate in frequent STAR work sessions and communicate with other pilot communities
·         Submit data, quantitative analysis, and narrative responses into STAR’s online reporting tool
·         Draft case studies, blog posts, reports, and other communication for the public to share information about STAR and Denton’s sustainability initiatives

Intern Qualifications

·         Bachelor’s degree (Master’s coursework preferred) in sustainability, urban planning, public administration, or related field
·         Strong research and writing skills, with attention to detail
·         Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
·         Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
·         Proficiency with ArcGIS desirable
·         Ability to work independently under general direction and with strong initiative
