Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

NCTCOG - GIS Technician II

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by and for local governments, and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOG's purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and help them recognize regional opportunties, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and make joint decisions. NCTCOG serves a 16 county region of North Central Texas, which is centered around the two urban centers of Dallas and Fort Worth. NCTCOG has over 230 member governments including 16 counties, numerous cities, school districts, and special districts.

Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking a mid-level Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician to provide advanced GIS and technology support to the department. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Monitoring and troubleshooting automated processes
Conducting inventory of datasets needed within department and updating data
Assisting with maintenance of GIS datasets
Providing GIS technical support and programming services for special department projects
Developing charts, maps, plots and reports using GIS
Analyzing, troubleshooting and resolving GIS application problems
Organizing, filing and maintaining GIS shapefile and geodatabases
Providing GIS assistance to department as needed
Serving as liaison between the Transportation and Research and Information Services departments to conduct information flow and sharing
Delivering oral presentations
Conducting GIS training

Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Detail oriented, highly organized, and ability to multi-task
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Knowledge of GIS software tools and application, which includes ArcGIS,  VBA and Python Scripting, 3D Analyst Extension, and Spatial Analyst Extension
Knowledge with other software including SQL and MS Office Suite
Knowledge of database software and CAD software preferred , but not required
Knowledge of principles and practices of GIS analysis and design
Knowledge of hardware and software application development methods, tools and utilities applicable to GIS


Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field, which is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor’s degree
At least three years of job-related experience

Salary
Minimum of $45,158.00 per year
