Course credit for internships

Students who are interested in obtaining credit for internships should first secure an internship with a provider. Once confirmed, contact Dr. Hudak, for permission to register for GEOG 4920/5900.

You will be required to compile a portfolio during the course of your internship and provide a letter of assessment from the internship provider. Both will be used to determine a "grade" for the course.

National Geographic Society - Geography Intern

ELIGIBILITY: Geography and cartography majors at United States colleges and universities who are currently enrolled in their junior or senior year or in a master’s degree program.

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM: To give students a professional learning experience through participation in various projects aimed at the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge. Interns are given the opportunity to apply knowledge and classroom techniques to practical publication procedures or other geographic outreach projects.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITY: Interns may be assigned to work in one of the many divisions within the National Geographic Society such as education, one of the magazines, books, television, or maps. Assignments may also include work on an increasing number of geographic outreach projects.

PERIOD OF INTERNSHIPS (14 OR 15 WEEKS):
Spring: January 21 through April 25, 2014
Summer: May 19 through August 22, 2014
Fall: September 8 through December 19, 2014

LOCATION: Interns will work at National Geographic Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

REMUNERATION: Interns will be paid $450 per week for a 40-hour workweek, plus a travel allowance to help defray expenses in traveling to Washington, D.C.

HOUSING: Interns are responsible for their lodging in the Washington, D.C., area, including meals and other living expenses.

In addition to the online application, students must furnish all of the following materials:
1. a short essay (500 words or less) relating experiences that led the applicant to formal training in geography, stating his or her professional goals, and explaining why she or he wishes to participate in the National Geographic Geography Intern Program;
2. a complete résumé that includes each of the following: the applicant’s extracurricular activities, awards and recognitions; employment history; special interests, hobbies, and travel; and a list of specific skills in cartography if interested in being considered for an internship in the Maps Division;
3. up-to-date official college transcripts, including undergraduate course work if applying as a master’s degree student;
4. three letters of recommendation (one from the applicant’s department chair or academic advisor and two from geography faculty members with whom the applicant has been associated);
5. a cover letter that clearly states the semesters (Spring 2014, Summer 2014, Fall 2014) that the applicant is available and the applicant’s first choice of semesters.

All these materials must be enclosed in one envelope (including the sealed confidential recommendation letters and transcripts) to:

CREDIT FOR INTERNSHIP: Where appropriate, credit for the internship may be possible through an arrangement with the intern’s academic institution and National Geographic.

GIS tech - Templeton Demographics



Templeton Demographics, located in Southlake, is looking for a GIS person to help with our Demographic studies. The position would be collecting and cleaning up data, making maps based on client requests, updating client folders with current GIS data, creating and analyzing student yields within school districts, and other needs as necessary. It would be an hourly job working at least 20 hours a week and up to 40 if the applicant can give us that much.

Overview:
The Sales Engineer will partner with Alteryx sales account teams, typically for multiple accounts, to demonstrate and facilitate clients understanding of Alteryx technology capabilities around our product, Alteryx Strategic Analytics.  Provides in-depth technical knowledge and is the primary interface with the customer’s technology leaders, through high-level technical solutions expertise.

·         Gather technical information regarding a customer’s existing or required geographic Business intelligence solution.  Including but not limited to Data Center Operations, Systems, Networking Infrastructure, applications, third party data requirements, and user access and business unit interdependencies.
·         Engage customers to extract critical technical and business drivers that may position Company Deliverables.
·         Architect solutions for current customers and prospects using Alteryx technology to build applications and/or an Alteryx developed and Hosted Solutions.
·         Remain up-to-date on Alteryx solutions and products and maintain familiarity and adherence to all Company methods and procedures.
·         Ability to provide second level support including assisting with creating customized or out of the box solutions.
·         Extensive travel requirements up to 50% (Domestic/International)

Qualifications:
·         College Degree, 3 - 5 years of technical services support and or pre-sales support experience.
·         Proven experience supporting the sale of Business Intelligence tools, solutions, and applications. 
·         Experience delivering business insights from data using pivot tables, advanced Excel models, or business intelligence tools.
·         Experience with analytics tools such as SAS, SPSS, R, or MATLAB.
·         Excellent technical skills and common business applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
·         Knowledge of Information Technology, web-based frameworks such as ASP.NET and RDBMS.
·         Demonstrated knowledge of SQL query language and data manipulation concepts.
·         Exceptional ability to listen, assess and document information from client.

Part-time student position, environmental/water quality


Seeking a student to work part-time (10-40 hours/week) with the following qualifications, for the job described below. Must obtain a strong faculty recommendation before applying.


Must meet the following requirements:
1.       Able to start immediately.
2.       Intends to work in the environmental services profession, especially groundwater/geology.
3.       Superior grades/class performance/responsibility/maturity.
4.       Spotless driving record.
5.       Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
6.       Willing to work out of town for field assignments, generally within the state of Texas.
7.       Able to pass company physical documenting ability to perform job duties.
8.       Has suitable vehicle that can transport the employee to our Bedford Texas office and/or job sites.


Job Description:
                Mix of field work and office work.  Field work includes operating company vehicles, soil sampling, water sampling, operating a wide range of environmental equipment.  The office work consists of environmental reporting, which includes data entry of lab results, data interpretation, statistical analysis, and report preparation.  Some of the “office” duties may be conducted off site (e.g., at home).

The field work consists of at least one full work day, and often more than one work day, e.g. Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, etc.  Accordingly, I need a student who has non-class days available during the work week so they can conduct out-of-town field work.  Students who have classes five days/week will not be suitable.

Hours
During the semester, generally 10-25 hours/week.  During the summer, generally 40 hours/week.

Compensation
                The first week of employment consists of training at home by taking the 40-hour computer-based HAZWOPER training.  This training will be compensated at $10/hour for 40 hours.  After this training is complete, all other work is compensated at $14/hour.  This position does not offer job benefits.

Hiring

We partner through a temp-to-perm placement agency to bring on new employees.  In the long term, the best part-time employees may be offered full-time SCS employment with benefits.
