GENERAL DESCRIPTION: |
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Student Internship Program introduces interested college students to career opportunities in positions located statewide and job settings to gain practical experience and training in natural and cultural resource fields.
Under the supervision of the Texas Outdoor Family Team Lead, this intern position is responsible for assisting with the development and delivery of educational and recreational programs at Dallas/Fort Worth Area State Parks. Attends a 1-week training at a Texas State Park during the first week of employment to learn how to deliver hands-on experiences to park visitors on a variety of topics, including Junior Ranger, Arts in the Parks, stargazing, night sounds, geocaching, kayaking, biking, fishing and Leave No Trace. Additional topics include guided hikes, interpretive roving, outreach, and CPR/First Aid. Delivers outreach to groups of all ages. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures. NOTE: Acceptance to the internship does not guarantee a permanent position in state parks.
Paid internships are available in various Divisions depending on available funding. The student internship program employment period varies depending on the specific intern opportunity. NOTE: If selected for a paid opportunity, intern will be paid at the rate of pay reflected from the completed hours on the Fall 2015 transcript.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES: |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university;
- Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours as of Fall 2015 from an accredited college or university;
- Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.
Experience:
Licensure:
- Must possess a valid state driver's license.
NOTE: Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:Experience:
- Experience in outdoor recreation or delivering educational programs;
- Experience working with the public;
- Experience in coordination of group activities;
- Experience in participation or leading others in outdoor activities.
Licensure:
- Current CPR/First Aid and Wilderness First Aid certification;
- Current American Canoe Association Instructor certification.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: |
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Required to work 16 to 32 hours per week, with days off other than Saturdays and Sundays;
- Required to work 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening work on weekends;
- Required to attend and participate in a 1 week training during the first week of employment;
- Required to perform manual labor including lifting supplies and materials up to 40 lbs.;
- Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;
- Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;
- Park vehicle may be available, otherwise mileage will be reimbursed if using personal vehicle;
- Required to travel in East Texas area 50% with possible overnight stays;
- Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
